Key signatures

• Jul 24, 2015 - 23:34

I'm rewriting a piece for 4 instruments; Bb Trumpet, Euphonium in G-key, Trombone in G-key and Eb Tuba in G-key. I got a problem when i was going to change the key signature for the trombone. When i would put the key signature i wanted, all the others would change. Is there some way to make it so I can only edit the trombone key signature?

You can if you hold down [Ctrl] or [Cmd] while you add the key signature, but are you sure you want to? That would be a very unusual thing to do.

MuseScore defaults to non-transposing for Trombone and Euphonium (because that's the way it generally is in an orchestral score). Right-click, Stave Properties and change "Play transposition" to 2 - Major Second and tick the "Down" button.

If you write a lot of brass music then I'd advise creating a template or using the British Brass Band template if it's for a full band.

Or, on the assumption that you also want treble clef, just use the "Trombone (Treble Clef)" instrument rather than the standard trombone (starting typng "trombone" into the search box at the bottom of the Instruments dialog).

It's important to use the transposition feature correctly - either manually via Staff Properties, or by simply selecting the proper instrument - otherwise playback and some other freatures will be incorrect. Unless you are writing music that is truly polytonal (very rare), you shoudl never be setting the key signatures for staves individually. Always let MuseScore do it, just give it the information it needs.
