Beginner's questions

Hello everybody,

I installed MuseScore (2.0.2, Windows 8.1) only yesterday and am trying to find out whether it's the right tool for me as a drummer. So far, I've not been able to find answers to the following questions:

1) Is it possible to have a number of independent staves in one score? I would like to create a sheet with a number of related exercises of just two to four bars each.

2) Is it possible to show the counted beats above a bar? I'd like to be able to indicate something like "1 e + a 2 e + a" etc. above the notes to help pupils learn to count properly.

3) Is it possible to indicate the sticking precisely blow the notes, i.e. something like "LLRL"?

4) Is it possible to modify the way in which notes are joined by flags? Specifically, in a sextuplet, I would like the first triplet and the second triplet to be joined by only one flag. A matter of personal taste, I suppose, but I find it much easier to read this way.

I would appreciate any helpful answer or pointer to a relevant source. Thank you.

Comments

1) You can have as many staves as you want. I guess by "independent" here, you really just mean, you want the second exercise to conceptually start *after* the first, not *at the same time as*, so MuseScore doesn't try to align the rhythms & barlines etc. Yes, that's certainly possible; just add as many measures as you need and add breaks between exercises. See Handbook under "Breaks and spacers"

2) You can add whatever text you like anywhere you like. See Handbook under "Text".

3) See 2).

4) Yes. In some cases you can set defaults in the Time Signature Properties dialog, but you can also override using Beam Properties palette. See the Handbook under "Beam" and/or "Time signature"

PS - and welcome, I think you'll find MuseScore amazingly powerful!

Thank you very much for pointing me to the relevant sections in the Handbook, Marc, that was most helpful! I've been able to achieve everything I wanted to do. Absolutely marvellous.
I'd wish that adding both the counting and the sticking (my questions 2) and 3)) was more intuitive, as part of a pre-defined palette perhaps, and less manual work, but as long as the program let's me do what I'd like to, do that's fine.
Thanks again. Looks like MuseScore has another user now...

Great!

See the Handbook under "Custom palette" to see how you can add appropriate pre-defined text elements to the palette. You might also consider using "Lyrics" rather than staff text, to quickly enter text below each note of the score. You can also customize the text style to control the default size and position.
