To me it seems like I don't have a choice, since when I copy notes, I cannot copy lyrics at the same time (and, by the way, I don't seem to be able to copy lyrics at all). Is there a way to change this?
Edit > Copy should always copy all the information possible. It is easier to delete extra information than recreate missing information.
However it can be convenient to limit what is pasted. For this, a separate paste command should be used Edit > Paste Special... similar to Microsoft Word. For more details see http://musescore.org/en/node/1942#comment-4595
Of all the issues that would improve MuseScore, adding in a way to copy and paste notes without lyrics would be one of the best. I need this feature constantly.
I agree it would be a nice enhancement to be able to control what does and doesn't get copied. Do be aware that there is a very easy workaround, though. Just copy to a scratch staff (perhaps a separate score) and delete the lyrics via right click, select all similar, delete. Then copy and paste that. Adds only a couple of extra clicks to the workflow, really.
But again, yes, a way of controlling this more directly would be nice. Sometimes I want lyrics, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I want chords, sometime I don't. Sometimes I want dynamics, sometimes I don't. Same with staff text, etc. There has been discussion of ways of controlling this, but I don't think any concrete proposals ever came out of it. Lots of possible ways it could be implemented - a dialog with global settings you make before the copy, a dialog with settings you make after the copy but before the paste that affects just that operation, etc.
The right-click thing is ace! Not being able to easily get rid of lyrics has been driving me crazy. Now I find that it's been there all along, I just didn't know where.
Being a Mac user, I don't actually have a two-button mouse, which is probably why I hadn't figured that one out. For any other Mac people, you have to use Control-Click instead of right-cllicking — but you probably knew that!

although a choice would be very useful.

Thanks David. Agreed.
David, do you want to add it to the issue tracker?
