Quater/eighth note combination for drumset

I am having a problem writing a quarter note drum grove that has an occasional eighth note base drum on the and of beat 4. I can get the eight note where I need it, but when I add the snare on count 4 it deletes the eighth note right after it. This is a common practice for rock drumming.
