Hard to tell, but I can tell you that it's not supposed to make a tied note appear—it's supposed to create a tie between existing notes. Does that answer your question?
By the way, welcome aboard.
Actually, pressing the tie button *does* create a note as well add the tie - *if* you are in note input mode when you press the button. See the Handbook under "Tie".
If that doesn't help, please psot the specific score you are having problems with and give precise step by step instructions to reproduce the problem.
That was it!
1. Both notes have to exist.
2. Exit input mode.
3. Tie.
Thank you!

Or, as I said, just press the tie button while still in note input mode - then you *don't* have to enter both notes first. And there is no need to leave note input mode to enter ties. As long as you press the button after entering the first note of the tie without then moving the cursor away, a new note will be added and tied automatically. Also, no need to use the mouse - simply pressing "+" does the job too.

Yes, that worked too.
I think that if the cursor is moved after the first note is entered, it can no longer be re-positioned to be in "tie-ready" mode and the tie button seems to have no effect.
Is that right?

Yes, that is correct. And also - you cannot tie multi-note chords this way. So indeed, sometimes you do need to leave note input mode to enter ties. But's that's the exception, not the rule. Normally, ties can be entered directly in note input mode.
