Musescore for Ubuntu stuck on v1.3 r5702
Help!
I <3 the program... but the bugs... not so much.
But I can't seem to upgrade from version 1.3!?!
I was running the version 12LTS edition of Ubuntu...
and tried all I could to upgrade to M.S.ver 2.0.2 with no joy.
It says the latest version is already installed.
I then upgraded my o.s. to Ubuntu 14.04LTS (trusty).
No difference... same result!
I tried to use the software center/installer.
No joy.
This is what I get (/got w both vers) when using the terminal interface:

I'm still at Musescore v1.3! :(
I know I may be the stupid link...
and won't be offended to be told so
(as long as enlightening info follows).
Thanks,
All help is greatly appreciated!

From one clueless user (who has just managed to stumble through this somehow) to another:
1. Try uninstalling it. I have a vague feeling that the little software gremlins are confused about which repository to update it from.
2. Then look at the Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic to see which version is shown.
3. If it's version 2, then you're in luck. Just install it, by whatever method you want.
If it's not version 2, check that the PPA is actually shown in software sources. If that doesn't do it, I hardly even know where to begin.

Thanks RexC!
I really appreciate the suggestion.
I'll give that a try and'll let you know.

Okay... that was a good suggestion.
It didn't work... but it was a good suggestion.
I now believe this is an (il)legitimate bug!
I'd be interested to know if ANYONE running Ubuntu has MS version 2.
At this point, I doubt it.
(And perhaps I should've waited, before I contributed all the money I did!! But it 'is' a good program... at least in concept. So I'll try not to be like that... at least not yet.)
Here's what happened:
* I uninstalled it as suggested.
* The repository only listed ver 1.3 :(
* I attempted to reinstall from the latest trusted PPA via terminal.
* Here's where I 'think' it failed (but I'll append the whole verbosity at the end, just in case I'm wrong!).
It seems to have been able to 'get' 20 items... but failed at #21... then perhaps defaulted to installing the pesky-persistent-buggy-version 1.3!:
"W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/mscore-ubuntu/mscore-stable/ubuntu/dists/trust… Unable to find expected entry 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/mscore-ubuntu/mscore-stable/ubuntu/binary-i386…' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
I HATE Windows... but perhaps I'll have to set up a special system, 'just' for this! That sucks!... And I hope they fix it soon!!!!!!!!
I'm new here, and hope this is the right place to post stuff for the developers. In any event, here's the whole shebang:

I tried with a virtual Ubuntu 32bit and everything worked as advertized.
You can try to remove the mscore-stable ppa, add it again and then try again the procedure, maybe trying "sudo apt-get update" a couple of times (maybe there was a temporary network failure).
If everything else fails, you could try to compile MuseScore by yourself, or (much easier) you could run the Windows version under wine ("sudo apt-get install wine" and remember to choose the Windows Portable version).
In reply to I tried with a virtual Ubuntu by ABL
Thank you ABL.
But when you say "everything worked as advertized."... does that mean you were able to run a version later than 1.3?
The reason I ask, is because it 'sort-a' worked as advertized for me too. I just ran into several bugs. And being a retired old-school, olde-tymey programmer... well, back in 'my' day... we believed in folks making sure they were running the latest versions, before complaining about bugs.
I haven't tried using a 'Live CD'... but those usually aren't up-to-date either (and loading windows on another PC is more productive, and isn't much harder than downloading and burning a new Live CD. But both are a pain in the '*' and wouldn't help any other so-&-so's like me. (As in, if v1.3 is the latest for Ubuntu... they need to say so!:)
But I 'did' try uninstalling the ap and removing the software source entry. So I really think it's a 'package delivery bug' and I did report it as such.
However, I didn't try compiling it myself.
That's a great suggestion...
and unless they provide me with a better solution soon,
perhaps my best option.
Hmm. I didn't try WINE either (since I'm skittish about emulators). But perhaps I should try that too... since I've been meaning to for years... hardware is so much faster... and since 'Wine Is Not an Emulator'. :)
Thanks again and have a great day!
KinniK
In reply to Thank you ABL. But when you by KinniK
Yes, I installed Ubuntu 14.04 32bit inside Virtualbox and then used the ppa to install the latest stable MuseScore available. As of today, the latest version available in the repository is 2.0.0 (so actually lacking behind the true latest version which is 2.0.2). It installed and didn't give any problems in quick tests.
Maybe you have some repository conflicts arising from the upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04; in that case I don't know what to suggest you.
I found that installing wine and running MuseScore portable within wine is extremely easy (and relatively quick).
If you decide to compile MuseScore by yourself, the source code can be found in the "download" page and step-by-step instructions here: https://musescore.org/en/developers-handbook/compilation/compile-instru… where you should use the source downloaded from the download page instead of the git folder, and you should use Qt 32bit version, since your system appears to be 32bit, if I understood correctly your terminal output.
Good luck.
Ciao,
ABL
EDIT: The SUFFIX and LABEL options mentioned in the Developer handbook page are some new parameters which were added only recently in the development branch; they will not work with the source code of MuseScore 2.0.2.

I have version 2.0.0 on Ubuntu. After I had some initial difficulty in installing, the instructions were updated, and that was supposed to have worked for you.
I think the pertinent error message here is
"Unable to find expected entry 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/mscore-ubuntu/mscore-stable/ubuntu".
I don't know what caused it.
Perhaps try again? If you get the same message again, it may be a question for the packagers.

Thanks RexC!!
That's some good info.
It looks like they recently worked on/moved the latest pkg, as well. That might have caused a hiccup. But, with the info you provided, I now know exactly what to look for.
Thanks a million!

Hi RexC,
This is what I was referring to:
~KinniK
The problem may have been due to software source conflicts that were disabled during upgrade to Trusty.
I removed all references to Musescore under 'System Settings' -> 'Software & Updates' (which I'd tried before, but this time I made sure I refreshed and cleared the cache). I then searched the repository, but still only found v1.3!
I then went to musescore.org and used the terminal method to install:
"Linux->
Ubuntu official: Please search for "musescore" in the Ubuntu Software Center, or click here to install directly from your browser. Note that the packages provided by Ubuntu are often not up-to-date - read about Ubuntu backports (below) if you wish to have the most recent version."
That enabled me to successfully retrieve and install version 2.0.0 rev 6e47f74 which doesn't sound like the 'latest'... but is far better than v1.3!
Sincere thanks to those who helped me!
(Aka RexC & ABL!)

I don't know why installation failed, or why it ultimately succeeded.
In any case, enjoy Musescore! Version 2 is really good. I don't think you'll regret having donated.
