Chaning all sharps to flats and double sharps to naturals

• Oct 1, 2015 - 03:29

I know I asked this question many weeks ago but lost the thread. I have a work in which the keys have changed and now I want to be in E flat. I was in a sharp key and when I go to the transpose function to take everything down a minor second, the results are now a mess of sharps and double sharps instead of flats as in the key of E flat. What is the best way to get all of the spellings to coincide with the key of E flat. and take out all of the sharps and double sharps. I surely don't want to do this manually one bar at a time. HELP please.

Without seeing the score, it's hard to give really good advice, but my guess is, you transposed from E, in which case minor second was the wrong interval to transpose - should have been augmented unison. Or simply tranposed by key rather than by interval. But no matter, it's a simple matter to respell everything to favor flats: just Ctrl+A to select all, hit up arrow to transpose up a half step (which will favor sharp spellings), then down arrow to transpose down (which will favor flat spellings). Should set most things the way you'd want, if I am understanding the situation correctly.

If that doesn't solve your problem, please post the specific score you are having problems with and we can suggest better solutions.
