MIDI note input does not work, but the synthesizer does

It appears that my keyboard isn't being detected quite right by MuseScore, although the built-in synthesizer DOES play any key I press, including the velocity I play it with. When I press a key, the sound plays but no note appears (even in note input mode) and the keyboard isn't highlighted.

In preferences, the MIDI input appears as "MMSystem, Portale G-1." PortMedia is able to detect the piano, it seems, although perhaps I am misinterpreting the UI. Cable is just a USB-B to USB-A.

My piano is a Yamaha YPG-235 with drivers installed; I'm running Windows 8.1 64-bit.
