Strange Behavior of F8, F9 (and F6)

• Oct 25, 2015 - 12:14

I have docked both the palettes and the inspector full length on the left-hand edge of the MuseScore-window so that the register buttons appear at the bottom.

  • Palettes and inspector are switched off.
  • Press F9: Palettes open
  • Press F8: Inspector opens, but in the background of the palettes. I can only see the register button at the bottom. (expected: inspector opens in front)
  • Press F8 again: nothing happens (expected: inspector comes to front)
  • Press F8 2nd time: The register buttons disappear. By keyboard I cannot get the inspector in front to use it.

When I start with the inspector, the second hit of F9 already closes the palettes:

  • Palettes and inspector are switched off.
  • Press F8: Inspector opens
  • Press F9: Palettes open, but in the background of the inspector. I can only see the register button at the bottom. (expected: palettes open in front)
  • Press F9 again: The register buttons disappear. (expected: palettes come to front)

As I have docked the selection filter as well, the same behavior happens with F6.

Is this the desired behavior or a (already known) bug?

What do you mean by "register button"? Can you post screen shots showing what you mean? The function keys work normally for me, toggling the respective windows. Something special about your window arrangement might be interfering with their normal operation.

Thank you for looking through my question!

Here is the screenshot. It shows the situation after the 3rd point of my step-by-step-description (After having opened the palettes I pressed F8 to open the inspector).

As you can see, the inspector has opened in the background. And I cannot get it in the foreground by pressing F8 again. With F8 I only can close it so that the register cards at the bottom of the window aren’t necessary anymore and disappear. The only possibility to get it in the foreground is to click with the mouse on its register card.

In my first post I forgot to mention that it’s exactly the same behavior when I use the commands of the View-menu: When the palettes are open I can’t get the inspector to the foreground by using the menu.

I hope that I could express the problem clearer now. By the way, I don’t have problems like this in any other applications on my computer. All windows open in the foreground.

Thank you for your interest!

So you have the Palette and the Inspector stacked, now you need to use those Tabs (or Registers) at the bottom to put one or the other into the forground.
F8 enables/disables the inspector, it has nothing to do with putting it into forground.

Hmm, well, it does for F6, the Selection Filter though... But not for F8, Inspector or F9, Palette, this does seem inconsistent to me.

Thank you!

For me it's rather strange that a new window opens in the background.
And when a window is in the background at the moment, normally - in other applications - this window goes to foreground when the command to open it is applied again.
I hope that I can repair this problem at my system resp. it will be fixed in further versions of MuseScore.
