Rest Chord
I feel silly asking such a basic question, but how do I enter both a rest and a note at the same position? I'm searched "Mastering MuseScore," but came up dry.
For example, how would I enter a quarter note and a eighth-note-rest in the same position, followed by an eighth note? I don't need separate voices, just want a rest & note in the same place.

Well, if so, that sounds an in incredibly awkward and klutzy way to do things. I tried switching voices, and MS seems to force me to start entering the other voice at the first note of the first measure. Does that mean I have to insert place holders at every note until I reach the one where I want the rest?
In NoteWorthy Composer this would a 2-second operation. Maybe I not familiar enough with MS yet, but this is not leaving a good first impression. Someone please tell me I'm not understanding this.

I'm not sure what you are finding surprising. Having a rest and a note at the same time *is* using multiple voices - this is how msuic has been written for centuries. And indeed, normally, both voices are shown in full, with the proper number of beats in each voice, so the notes and rests are entered left to right in each voice, just as they would be if entering only a single voice.
There are some special case exceptions where the ordinary rules of music notation allow a given voice to *not* show all the beats, and MuseScore does let you hide or even delete rests in these special cases, but the norm in published music is to show each voice completely. For example, this is taken from a Bach fugue:
Notice how each voice - two in the top staff, two in the bottom - show all four beats. This again is how standard music notation normally works. So you simply each each voice left to right.
If you are still having problems, feel free to post the specific score and explain the problem in more detail. Maybe your situation is one of those special situation where it is permissible not to all each voice compeltely as is the norm and is shown in the example above. In that case, you simply hide or delete the rests you do not need. For instance, just press 0 to enter the rest then V to hide it. But be sure you sdo understand whetehr or not your situation is one of the special exceptions where this is considered acceptable practice.
