why are some notes yellow ?

Some notes have randomly turned yellow, though color says they are still black.

This has to do with the accepted range of the selected instrument. The change in colour means that the note(s) are out of the accepted range. They will still play and print.

Cellos can play down to the C (two ledger lines below the bass clef staff). MuseScore does not change the notes for cello to red unless you are below the C.

If you are experiencing something different then maybe there is something wrong with your particular score. Can you attach it to a reply below? What version of MuseScore are you using?

Actually, yellow means it's out of the accepted range for amateur players, not that it can't be played on the instrument. Yellow just means that it's going to take a more experienced player to play those notes. Red means they're technically not possible on the selected instrument.

Neither of the colors show in printing and can be disabled via Edit -> Preferences -> Note Entry -> uncheck Color notes outside of usable pitch range.

A "D" in the middle of the staff for cello shouldn't appear yellow for an amature. I meant that I would be interested whether it is problem with MuseScore (that others might encounter). If so, then the next step would be to fix it.

Do you have this problem with every score that you create for cello, or is it just this one score?

At the moment, my guess is the number for the amature's lowest note was changed accidentally for this particular score.
