See #49341: Two staves, one hidden—barline shown at beginning of each line for an overview of the original related issue. Currently, the same problem is still present when you first open such a score, but disappears as soon as any layout-related action is performed (e.g. select all). In this respect it seems quite similar to #66276: My First Score shifts from A4 to Letter after load in USA (or Canada?). This only becomes problematic if you attempt to open and print an existing score without doing anything else to it first.
Comments
Can you attach a score that demonstrates the problem?
How about instructions? Because there's something else weird happening, too.
New Score wizard, choose Grand Staff template, click Finish. Enter one note at the beginning of the top staff. Style -> General… -> check "Hide empty staves", uncheck "Don't hide empty staves in first system", click OK.
At that point, you see the present issue. Now:
[Ctrl]+[A], and the barline disappears.
Here's the "something else weird." [Ctrl]+[Z] twice, and you're back to the grand staff being displayed—but without the barline.
[Ctrl]+[A] again, and the barline reappears.
If you're still waiting for an example score, here's one: https://musescore.org/en/node/92146#comment-407016

It's even worse than implied by earlier comments. If you do a Select All to force a relayout, the left barline disappears. If you then save the file, close it, and reopen it, the barline is back. This is not how I expect MuseScore to work: Save should save all changes, and turning off "barline at start of single staff" should actually remove the barline. Accordingly, I think #49341: Two staves, one hidden—barline shown at beginning of each line should be reopened.
