Those instructions do work. Follow them very carefully. If you still can't get it, then post the score you are having trouble with and described precisely what you are doing, step by step, and at what point something goes wrong.

If you don't want to do each note separately, but have it work automatic in you score, try using a custom time signature of 4/4 with defined beaming rules.
