Problem with unusual placement of volta (middle of 2nd beat in 2/4 time)
The source material calls for a prima volta in measure 27, half-way through the 2nd beat (where I've put a repeat bar in the attached). MuseScore doesn't seem to support placing a volta other than the beginning of a measure; shift+arrow only moves the attachment point to another measure, not another note.
I tried a work-around by breaking the measure into two smaller measures, but since the piece is in 2/4 time, the repeat bar & volta occur in the middle of a beat, and the options to change the measure don't allow for fractions.
I could always change the piece to 4/4, which would allow breaking it into a 3-beat & a 1-beat measure with the repeat bar & volta between them, but I would prefer to stay true to the source material. (It's Mozart, after all!)

Split into two measures of 3/8 and 1/8?
ie:
Delete those repeat bars.
Insert a blank measure after the measure you want to split.
Right-click on the blank measure, select Bar Properties and make its Bar Duration 1/8 and check the box for "Exclude from bar count".
Copy the last eighth note from the first measure to the new measure
Right-click on the first measure and set it to 3/8.
Insert your repeat sign (the correct way around).
Insert your volta.

Underquark, thanks. I came up with an even easier way- select the first note after the repeat bars, from the menu Edit/Measure/Split Measure (which does an actual measure split at the repeats), and add the Volta. But I certainly appreciate your time & effort.
Are you sure Mozart himself really wrote it that way? Sounds more like something introduced by some editor later, and not necessarily an editor I'd be going out of my way to emulate. It's definitely not standard notation.

Marc, you're spot on. I started having some doubts when I realized the volta was being used as a 1st/2nd *beginning* instead of *ending*, and that a DS al fine was more appropriate. I found a different (older) score, which rendered it just like I suspected it was supposed to be.
The only issue (and it's not really significant) is that I can only get one repeat, but there's 3 verses.
My big take-away is that I learned how to use a few new features of MuseScore- change instrument (where Papageno plays the flute) & the use of Edit/Measure/Split Measure.

To get a repeat to happen more than the default number of times, you need to set the repeat count for the measure containing the end repeat in Measure Properties, and/or set up the repeat lists in the Volta Properties when using those. Getting these values right is tricky. The systyem is logical but not always intuitive. Without knowing how you want the roadmap to go exactly, it's hard to be more specific than that in our advice, but see the Handbook under Repeat, Measure operations, and Volta for some general advice.

I got the desired number of repeats by switching from DS al fine & the segno to simple repeat bars, and (as you said) changing the number of repeats in the last measure.
The DS al fine / segno method showed the number of repeats set at 2 in the last measure, with the control dimmed and not editable.
As long as I get the notes correct, I've decided to not worry about being that true to the source material. I'm switching from the original instrument lineup in the score (that had the vocal line between the violas & cellos) to the standard recommended by Dolmetsch online, and also changing the Horn from a G to an F. This will probably never be played by real people, but if it is I would prefer to accommodate the instruments they are more likely to have.
Thanks very much for the advice,

For the record, the repeat count in Measure Properties is *only* for actual repeat barline, not for DS or DC. That is why it is greyed out unless there is a repeat barline present.
