Soundfonts Library Compatibility

• Feb 3, 2016 - 06:07

Hello there,

I am new to 'Musecore' but not new to music composition and performance, generally.
In the past I have used several sound-fonts, 'Garritan Personal Orchestra' in iterations going away back to
v2; the 'Notion' sound-fonts (London Symphony Orchestra), The 'Miroslav Philharmonik' and others. I too rejected the 'Philharmonia' sound-fonts as inadequate, due to their having been put out in MP3. Has anyone any experience of incorporating any of these, or other sound-fonts into 'Musecore'? If someone has that experience and is prepared to share it, it might save me a certain amount of trying to 're-invent the wheel'. In turn, I might be able to shed light on one or two aspects of getting soundfonts to work, which I have picked up over the years. I will be particularly interested in the forthcoming 'GPO-5' samplings.

MuseScore only supports SF2 soundfonts (Also SF3, which is a format only for MuseScore, and SFZ but it's experimental, and the samples need to be DRM free). As far as I know GPO doesn't exist in the soundfont format. I guess it's the same for Notion LSO and Miroslav Philharmonik. They all come in VST or AU, or standalone and MuseScore cannot work with these.

Currently the only way to work with this type of virtual instrument is to use JACK and a VST host like Carla.

Part of GPO came in SFZ format with my installation of Sonar Professional, but the proprietary licence would preclude anything other than personal use with MuseScore.

And the act of turning it into an SF2 would violate the licence!

However, although MuseScore does support SFZ, the implementation is in its infancy and deosn't support all opcodes. Consequently there is a high degree of risk that an SFZ will not work with MuseSCore.

Thanks for the information. The introduction of GPO-5 with a vastly extended range of samplings
is pending and scheduled for late February. I was once informed that the SFZ files which accompany GPO, have used, since GPO-3 a proprietary 'SFZ' format which is unable to be translated into anything else. I gather also, that although I have 'Translator 6.1' this sort of thing is frowned upon, although I cannot see why, since I paid 'full-whack' for the 'Aria-based' version of the software but have only ever got 'partial use' out of it. As a retiree, I cannot afford to go on endlessly parting out for soundfonts. However, 'GPO' files in their particular flavour of 'SFZ' work fine in 'Notion', but 'Miroslav Philharmonik 2' does not, and no-one seems to be in any particular hurry to facilitate its use with 'Notion 5', hence the general inquiry regarding the compatibility of
'MuseScore'.
