How not to have a chord...

I've puzzled for weeks over how to achieve the attached... can't figure it out by myself, so I wonder if someone could kindly advise me.

Basically, I don't want the top note to be part of the chord below, otherwise I have to duplicate the chord for each note (which takes ages longer to achieve and looks messy!).

I'd really appreciate some help! Thanks.
