The very first thing Tantacrul zooms in on in his MuseScore UI review (see https://youtu.be/4hZxo96x48A?t=406) is this:
Regardless of the fate of the turquoise, getting rid of the red and black TT (TrueType?) icon next to every font in the list should solve the problem of the "ghastly" red+black+turquoise combination. I have never seen such icons in any other application.

We don't add this, so I'm not sure how we could remove it? Seems Qt's font selector does it for us.

QT supports many font formats:
And I think there is a separate symbol for each.
See raster font (FNT) symbol ("a" icon) in screenshot:
There must be a property somewhere to disable the icons...
It might be useful to know the font type (e.g. if you have the same font installed in multiple formats) so I'd prefer to fix this by solving the issue with colouring if possible, such as swapping turquoise for grey, or using bold and/or italics instead of colours to indicate non-default settings.

Yes, that would work.
That TT icon is only in the selector, there only one of the fonts would be the style setting, so at most that single one should be turquoise or otherwise highlighted, all the other should simply be black.
If coloring/highlighting just one isn't possible, don't do it at all and all should be just black.
Microsoft Office/Outlook 2013 BTW uses a colored icon too BTW (and with turqoise):
