Project
1) Dock mixer pane and hide the detail section
2) Reduce to size to minimum height and to about 3 channels wide (image 1)
3) Show the detail section (image 2)
4) Hide the detail section (image 3)
At this point the mixer has not been restored to the size after step 2 which feels a bit odd.

Why reporting vs. MuseScore 3.3 (now)? Have you checked 3.4.2 and also 3.5 Alpha? I think those may do it differently already

Will update my install and re-check

In 3.4.2.9788 the height is remembered but the width is not.
(I prefer not to install alpha software releases so haven't checked 3.5 but will check once this version reaches full release status.)
Same in 3.5 Aplha
Image 1 is allowing only one channel. Guitar needs 2 or 3 though
The Details section need more width (and doesn't have and scrollbars, so can't do it differently), so it sets that

This is from a guitar piece. I've only ever seen 1 channel in the mixer. If I create a new guitar tab then there is still only 1 channel.
The number of channels differ a lot depending on what Guitar you use (and in what version of MuseScore the instrument got added/changed). And in 3.5 there's also the additional channel for Chord Symbols.
But it isn't an issue with the channels, misunderstanding on my side.

Of course the detail needs more space but I'm referring to the display AFTER the detail section is hidden. It doesn't restore back to the width before being hidden.
Yes, confirmed, but I guess that's by design, and probably it should open the mixer in the full width from the start.
Only if adding a vertical scroll bar to that details section we could store a narrower setting IMHO.
All this will get a big overhaul for MuseScore 4 anyway, so I don't think a small separate improvement for 3.x makes sense

The improvement seen in 3.4.2 does not actually restore the initial detail-hidden layout but preserves the size by introducing scroll bars, so this is not a full restore either.
!!! MS4 is already on the way? I'm only just getting settled in with MS3
Not really on the way yet. But some work on it started in the background
