Pressing F2 while entering text allows you to enter almost any text you want to enter, it's just tedious. If you tell what language you are using someone from that country might be able to help you configure your keyboard so you can use that without needing to use F2.

the IPA has not only letters but also special symbols so its not a question of languageor letters but of markings. its studied by trained singers and i wanted to use it for lyrics.

Since IPA is not a language with a configurable keyboard you will need to enter the symbols from special characters using F2. There is an IPA extensions list as well as other alphabets that would fill in any gaps.

F2 is explained in https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/text-editing#symbols-and-special-ch….
Basically, when you are entering or editing text, press F2 or click the fancy 'a' shown in the above link and double click a symbol to insert it.

i put in some lyrics. i then pressed the F2 key on my computer and nothing seemed to happen.
I can't find the fancy a" keyboard icon in the text toolbar (below the score window)." or the Special Characters window.

press ctrl+L to start entering lyrics
When you need an IPA symbos, press F2 and a new window will appear
Find the IPA symbol you need and double click it. (you can double click several in a row if you need several IPA symbols)
Close the window when you are done entering an IPA symbol
type more lyrics or press space to move to the next note
Repeat the F2 and double click symbols as often as you need to closing it when you are done entering IPA symbols.

Were you still in lyric input mode? You cannot enter lyrics, press escape then press F2. You must still be in lyric (or any text) input mode.

Enter the string in that web page according to its instructions. Then copy-paste into individual lyrics or text blocks. As I said, doing a whole song that way might be tedious.

finally getting around to this. By string do you mean what i type out on that keyboard? is this easier or more dificult for a whole song than what was suggested above using what is in musescore already?

Create a "staff text". Click on the note or rest where you want it to go. Type ctrl-T, and then copy/paste the text from the email. If it's a lyric you want, type ctrl-L instead.

I don't know what more I could say. Copy the text in the other application, select the note, type ctrl-L, and when the lyric box opens, type ctrl-V (that is, the V key, while the key marked CTRL is held down (assuming you are on Windows)). There's not really much more detail one can say about it.

it seems that this works but only one word per note; what i would like to do is put the entire lyrics in before write all the notes. i tried clicking on one note and then pasting in the whole text but only one word appears. How can i put the entire text in rather than word by word. should i start a new question for this?

Control-space will insert a non-breaking space. Then you can do one word at a time. I don't have a better solution off the top of my head. Anyone?
