IPA text
Help please. I am trying to enter an IPA symbol in text. I highlighted a note, then hit CTRL+L and a little box appears to enter the text. I understood from the comment below that the IPA symbols can be reached through Musescore. To access the IPA symbols i tried F2 meaning F+2 and i got something else. I then tried the key with f2 on it and again i got something else. According to the comment below, if i understood it correctly, this should open something with the IPA symbols. What am i doing wrong or did i misunderstand? would appreciate clear explanation of what to do. Many thanks. Philip

press ctrl+L to start entering lyrics
When you need an IPA symbos, press F2 and a new window will appear
Find the IPA symbol you need and double click it. (you can double click several in a row if you need several IPA symbols)
Close the window when you are done entering an IPA symbol
type more lyrics or press space to move to the next note
Repeat the F2 and double click symbols as often as you need to closing it when you are done entering IPA symbols.

F2 is a key on your keyboard, usually located along the top row, above the numbers. That's what you need to press. Or click the little icon at the far left of the text toolbar on the bottom of the MuseScore window. You need to do this while you are editing the lyrics. A dialog box entitled "Special Characters" appears and allows you to choose from thousands upon thousands of symbols. Some of them will appear right in front of you in that dialog, because it will be set to the "Common Symbols" tab. For the rest, you need to click the "Unicode Symbols" tab and figure out where they are from there.

thanks to both of you. there is no F2 key on my keyboard; along the top there is an f2. i highlighted a key and then CTR+L and the lyric box opens. when i hit f2 key it opens a brighness control. there is also a sun symbol on that key so this makes sense. Since the f2 is above the sun symbol i also tried CTR+f2 and SHiFT+f2 and nothing happens. What am i doing wrong? i have HP Spectre laptop and Windows 10.

Some keybaords use capital letters, others use lower case, but it's the case key whether labeled F2 or f2. Just as the "A" key is the "A" key whether it is labelled "A" or "a".
Anyhow, if it opens brightness when pressed alone, probably there is some other key on your keyboard, perhaps labeled Fn, that works in conjunction with f2 to do a "real" f2. That os, press Fn and f2 together to get it to do what f2 is supposed to do normally. This isn't some weird MuseScore-ism, it's basic to pretty much all software on all computers. So for instance, in almost every program in the world, F1 is the "help" command, and in almost every web browser, "F5" is the "refresh" command. on your keyboard you probably need to press Fn with those keys to get that result.

many thanks for your continued assistance. the problem was solved by using the funny a below the tool bar.
See the special characters chapter of https://musescore.org/en/handbook/text-editing
If the F2 key (one single key) doesn't work for you, then use the button in the bottom toolbar instead.
