The notes to set the length are very small compared to everything else
I can't see the notes on my screen, but I can only work out how to change the font size. See below. Any instructions on how to change this very welcome.

Try the -D xxx command-line-option, xxx being the screen resolution in dots per inch

I’ve read stuff about that but I’m afraid I don’t know what I actually need to do. Can you talk me through?

See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/revert-factory-settings#instructions-… and replace " -F" with " -D xxx"
Assuming a 24" screen at 1920x1080 try " -D 92" (as per Pythagoras: "sqrt(1920x1920 + 1080x1080) / 24" or try https://www.sven.de/dpi/).
