When I enter chord symbols, there is no added space in them. You will need to upload your score for us to see what's going on.
Indeed, it's hard to tell what's going on from just a picture. I can say, though, that the chord symbol facility works best with fonts that are actually designed for that purpose. Looks lik you are trying to use a font that was not.

That seems likely to me. Specifically, the "flat" symbol seems to add the extra spaces. What font is normal? I inherited this score from a friend and am cleaning it up. Not sure if I want to upload the score, though, without his permission.
This chord symbol font is MS Shell Dlg 2

The two most common fonts for chord symbols in MuseScore would be FreeSerif (used by default when creating a new score from scratch by choosing instruments, an d also used by the non-Jazz templates) and MuseJazz (used by the Jazz templates).
Could be he wasn't actually using MS Shell Dlg 2, but was trying to use some other font that you don't have on your system, so that is what is getting substituted. As mentioned, attaching the actual score would allow us to help better, but I understand if it's not yours to post. Looks like he has made a few other customizations, like choosing Gonville as his notation font. Depending on how well he knows MuseScore, either he was doing a good job of all this or he wasn't - again, hard to say from just the picture. But it's possible you're better off just copying and pasting everything from his score into a new one created from one of the templates.

Thanks for the feedback. Used MuseJazz and it looks a lot more readable. :)

If you click on a chord symbol does it say Chord Symbol in the lower left corner of the MuseScore window or does it say some sort of text? If it's text, then you will want to re-enter them yourself and delete the existing ones to make it look right.
I got the same problem here: space between root note text and notation. How to fix it?
Thanks!

Are you using MuseScore 3? This should all work automatically now. If you are still having trouble, please attach your score so we can understand and assist better.
