MuseScore 3 crashes on start up
I have seen a thread from 2019 that seems to cover this issue. I have tried everything which I will list below with no change on the start up crash.
- Fresh install of MuseScore 3 from a fresh download from the site. Still crashed on startup.
- Uninstalled and removed Musescore entries from the Registry.
- Fresh install of MuseScore 3 from same downloaded file. Still crashed on startup.
- Started MuseScore by clicking on an msz file. Musescore opened!
- Tested from icon again, but crashed.
- From Edit -> Preferences I unchecked "Show splash screen" and "Show start center and clicked "Apply".
- Tested from icon again, but crashed.
- Performed restore Factory settings: C:\Program Files\MuseScore 3\bin>MuseScore3.exe -F and followed the prompts.
- Musescore 3 opened, and I could open a score. Then I closed the score, and tried to open from icon again, but Musescore 3 crashed on start up again.
I now can only open from a previously saved score.
What else can I do?

I forgot to mention that I am using an HP Pavilion Laptop, 64 bit, Windows 10 operating system.
Start by double clicking a score, then disable start center

I have done that already (see item 6. in my post). I also did it again just now, and I still cannot start MuseScore 3 directly from the icon. The problem persisits.

Looks like I'm going to have to wait for the next update to see if that will fix the issue.

Waiting most probably won't help much, as long as there's no hint or idea what the problem might be.

I'm running out of ideas unfortunately.
Short of you build MuseScore yourself and run it in a debugger that is...

I don't know if you get notified of my replies to others in this thread, but I was able to solve my problem. I added MuseScore3.exe as an exception in my virus protection app, and now I can open MuseScore 3 without crashing.

Yes, I did. Good stuff, and hopefully can help others with similar problems
What Antivirus are you using?

I use AVG.

Just curious: why? Microsoft's Defender is free and good enough.

I've been using AVG for almost 20 years. I haven't seen any reason to use anything else. Thanks for the link, too. Turns out to be a known issue.

Since Windows 7 (ar least, maybe even since XP already) I'm using Defender, Norton before, but that money is saved now.

I too am using an HP Pavilion Laptop, 64 bit, Windows 10 operating system and although I had intermittent crash problems with 3.5 alpha, beta and RC and initially had persistent crashes with 3.5.0, I have had no problems since running 3.5.0 with the "-F" command line option. However, my installation was not a fresh one. It started in the dim distant past with some version of MuseScore 1 and then has gone through various updates via 2 to 3 to 3.4.2. and then the various incarnations of 3.5 using downloaded msi files from MuseScore.org. I still have 2.3.2 installed. There is plenty there that could be making a difference between our installations, but let's start with a couple of more easily accessible areas:
a) What do you see when you look at the properties of the shortcut? In particular, what do you see in the Shortcut and Security tabs. Here is what I see:
b) what Preferences do you have set? I think the General Tab may be the most relevant and here is what I have.

Thank you very much for these ideas. My icon properties are like yours. But having me check Security gave me an idea. I just opened the icon with "Run as Administrator", and it opened! I then matched my Preferences to yours, and tried to open as normal. It crashed. But now that I can open with "Run as Administrator", I'm going to see what is going on with Windows Security and my virus protection program. I think I'm on to something now

I found a solution, at least for my situation. Even though my login has Administrator privileges, I went to my virus protection program and added an exception for MuseScore3.exe. Now I can open MuseScore 3 without crashing.
Thanks for helping!

I just experienced the same problem with Windows 10, 64 bit, and MuseScore 3.5.2.311459983. I can double-click a score and get in. I turned off Start Center and can now launch with the icon.
The problem first appeared after I tried to resize the Muse Score window (maximize, or reduce from maximize - not sure) while the program was still launching.
