Ties formatting
No matter what I do, ties formatting seem to have a mind of their own and it greatly impacts the format of the score. Is there a way to manually adjust the length of them? I start with a normal distance between notes and every time I try to do anything with the score, the distance between notes increase and I cannot decrease the length of the tie.

It is possible to manually adjust the length, but that will change the distance separating the end of the tie from the note(s) to which the tie is anchored. The measure width is not affected.
However, if the measure width is decreased, the tie will follow.
Please attach the score for more detailed advice, if needed.
Thank you so much for your reply. I have tried just about everything I know.
Attached is the score and the measures are 22 and 57. This score is still need to be completed. I would like to fit this in two pages and I can get there by adjusting margins and so on, but shorter tiers would help, too!

You don't have ties, you have Doit's from a palette. Ties are entered by selecting the first note and pressing + or clicking the icon on the toolbar that has 2 notes tied together. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/ties for more info.

Don't give it a second thought. I do encourage you to read the manual once so you can become familiar with things you'll likely use.
