Suggestion: to have tabs in a score, like Excel, to create books of different scores or separate instruments

• Jan 1, 2021 - 15:06

Often I need to collate different scores. Putting them together in a single score is well-nigh impossible - If I need them for printing I create pdf files and then merge them, but that doesn't enable playing them in a single file.
A UI like Excel could solve the problem of multi-score and multi-instrument scores.
An enhanced version could even link actions between the collated scores (e.g. updating dependent scores of single instruments from a single master score,....)

I made an Excel file of an Index by melody, composer, genre and more for the Real Book of Jazz (www.avronp.com/music)

There is expected to be an album feature in version 4 that will allow users to put several different songs in one file.

"updating dependent scores of single instruments from a single master score,....". That is what happens automatically (usually) when you create parts from a multi-instrument score.

I say "usually" as the linkage between parts and score can be a little fragile at times, particularly if major surgery, like changing time signatures is done after parts are created, as this can, in some not very well understood circumstances, lead to corruptions. But for less "structural" adjustments like adding dynamics or changing note pitches and durations, the score-part linkage seems to work OK.

As mentioned above, MsueScore already supports having the score and parts combined into one file, this has been a basic feature of the program for many years. But you don't start with separate parts then combine them - you start with the score, then generate the parts in one step, in File / Parts.
