Subdividing a bar in compound notation
I'm trying to notate some arabic ornaments using MuseScore, and I would like to divide a measure (9/4) without splitting it. I want to show how the beats fall within the 9/4 key signature by adding dashed barlines like those in the barlines palette, but keeping the 9/4 in place. Is that possible?
Ideally, I would be showing the same thing in the lyrics (I have a double backslash in the original transcription)
Thank you!

If the dotted barline has to appear consistently, then why would you not want to split the measure? The time signature will still read 9/4, with two incomplete measures making up the total duration. If you exclude the 2nd measure from the measure count, even displayed measure numbers wouldn't be affected.

Ah, I was somehow creating an extra bar before, but now it's working (what you are describing is what I wanted to do, so now I've done it... thank you!)
Yes.
Select the note or rest you want the dashed barline to appear before, then click on the dashed barline in the F9 palette. (Selecting the whole measure will create the dashed bar line after the measure.)
I'm not sure how you want the lyrics to appear, but I'd think double backslashes would work just fine.

I still haven't figured out how to add them halfway between lyrics using the lyrics palette, but adding them as text finally worked.

It's not clear to me what you mean, but there is no lyrics palette :-). If you attach a sample score and/or a picture of what you want to achieve, we can understand and advise better.
