Seeing double
I somehow clicked on something that resulted in my score being displayed as two identical scores, one at the top of the screen and one at the bottom, and I can't find a way to undo it. It stays that way when I save the score and load it again, and I can't find anything in the Handbook about how change this. How can I get back to the original display?

Here is where to look in the handbook https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/viewing-and-navigation#display
Go to the View menu and untick Documents Side by Side.

Thanks. I was going to try that, but I also found that apparently dragging the bottom screen all the way down gets rid of it. At least when I did that, saved and reloaded the score, the second screen was gone.

Rereading your original post, properly this time, I see that you had scores shown one above another rather than side by side. For the benefit of others who may have encountered the same thing, I should correct my reply and say that you need to untick [View]>Documents Stacked.
Your solution of dragging the divider off the bottom of the screen works in its way, but if you subsequently want two panes to be shown you will have to drag the divider back up again. If you look at the view menu now you will probably see that the Documents Stacked option is still ticked. Unticking and ticking it will have no visible effect on the display (which would be rather confusing) until you drag that divider back into view.
Perhaps it would be better if dragging the divider off screen automatically unticked that box and ticking it again reset the divider's position to somewhere that is visible, or perhaps if a divider is dragged off screen there should be some indication that it is still there. I feel the beginnings of a suggestion in the issue tracker.

Suggestion added #317946: Side-by-side and stacked views should indicate when the divider is dragged out of sight

Thanks, Documents Stacked was checked, so I unchecked it. I have no idea though how I managed to check it in the first place.

Check your shortcuts [Edit]>[Prefences]>Shortcuts. You may have somehow got a shortcut defined that would toggle the stacked display by some keypress combination. Default is to not have a shortcut defined.
Or perhaps you were clumsy with the mouse when trying to click on something else in the view menu.

Maybe you enabled timeline and disabled it again? This is know to leave that side-by-side setting in place
