Crescendo/decresecendo playback
Is there a way to have crescendos/decrescendos play back without using hairpins? I have a score where crescendos (especially) and decrescendos play out over several pages where a hairpin would be impractical at best; yet I'm not hearing a change in volume on playback.

The plain line versions playback exactly the same way as the hairpin versions, and you can make the line portion invisible in the Inspector.

Plain-line versions. Can't say I'm familiar. Where in the handbook is that mentioned, please?

I should probably add that this score is converted from MS2; so I'm sure there's stuff that needs to be changed to work properly in MS3, isn't there?

The hairpins lines are discussed in the Handbook under Hairpins. There shouldn't be any special steps you need to do to prepare a 2.x score to use them. As a note, you don't actually need the line portion to be visible, you can hide that in the Inspector (the "Line visible" setting) leaving only the word "cresc" or "dim".
