Help Translate? - Old and in French
I am transcribing a great concert band score from 1891. It is also in French language. I am especially interested in understanding the symbol in a series of 7 measures in the second staff row. A rest? I don't fully understand the meaning of "Col Pon. solo", although I suppose P'on is an abbreviation for "Piston" (in Bb), so I suppose this is a form of old Alto horn. This sheet is a combined part for Bb trumpet and "piston" being another Bb horn.
But, please - look at the image and tell me what these 7 symbols in the second row are?

If you mean the first line, then there is a solo instrument playing its own part and it will be notated somewhere separately.
If you mean the second line, they're just rests. Some older music has quarter-note rests that look the mirror-image of eighth-note rests, some look like a back-to-front Z.

Thanks - I have been treating them as rests. This score's quarter rest look like a "backward" Z and an example is visible in the middle of the last line. I appreciate the help.
