Quick note input for beats 3-4
I'm in note input mode with eighth note selected (there's a whole rest) , and forced to place it on the 1st beat. So far the only way to get around this is to go through multiple steps.

Indeed, enter the rests first.
Each measure is filled left to right

Once in note input mode press 6 0 to enter a half note rest and then enter your eighth note.

Yeah but there's multiple steps, 1. click on the rest 2. press a button 3. I still can't enter on the 2nd or 4th beat. It would be way easier to hover over with my mouse and eighth rests appear, and go away if I don't notate at all

But how would you ensure that that MS knew that you meant the third beat and not beat 2.5 or wherever? You want eighth rests to appear; what if I want 16th or quarter or dotted eighth?

The end result you want in you score is a rest followed by notes. So, simply enter the rest followed by the notes. These arent extra steps - you read and write music left to right whether notes or rests.
But FWIW, if you're looking to improve efficiency, stop clicking, and simply type in your music. 6 0 5 C C enters a half rest followed by two quarter notes.
You don't enter the 3 letter of a word first when writing some text, do you?

Simple, just select eighth note in the tool bar and hover over the measure. Not rocket science? It's silly that it takes over 4 steps just to put in a note. It's almost like the developers haven't changed anything since 2002. Seriously who presses the C key for a C note. Boomers

If there are rests or notes already at the desired position, this does work. If there's just a full measure rest it doesn't and can't.
I'm a mouser too, but only because o still can get my head round to remember notenames. Using the keys is way faster than mouse entry.

The question is not far-fetched however. This works in Dorico and in Sibelius.
Dorico uses a 'popover' devider for this

There already was a discussion about this some years ago.

But i guess that nobody here in the forum has any saying on the future development of MS anyway. So it does not matter what we think about it.

Half of Europe think Do when they see C but they have to press C anyway...
