Default octave for note input
When an instrument has a usable pitch range defined through the Staff/Part properties, is there a way to have the default octave of an input note fall within that range? I am constantly having to shift octaves when inputting notes to get them within the range of the instrument.

You need to know the instruments you write for. It's all part of the craft.

I know the instrument, and have specified it and defined its usable pitch range, but Musescore frequently chooses an octave outside of the specified range when I enter a note through the keyboard. The fact that the note appears in red indicates that Musescore 'knows' that it's outside the range, but chooses that octave anyway.

Sorry. I don't use the keyboard for note entry. I believe that there is an extra keystroke that will put the entered note in the proper octave.You might take at The manual.
As to why MuseScore automatically enters a note outside the range, I'm not sure. I notice that an E4 is red in some of my compositions for flute. That's why I said you need to know the instrument.

Yes, the Cntrl-up and Cntrl-down arrows will move the note up or down an octave, but it really slows down the note input process if you have to keep doing this (especially if, like me, you are a poor keyboardist, and look at the keys instead of the screen when typing, so you don't notice notes in the wrong octave as you enter them).
As for the red E4, if you access the Staff/Part properties (select a bar and right click on it to get that menu) you can set the usable range for the staff to include the range that you want to use in your composition.

I wish I had a better answer for you. Hopefully someone will come along with a suggestion for you.
I suppose you could just let MS enter notes in the wrong octave, then do a range select and put them in the correct octave. What instrument is doing that for you?
As for my red E4, I don't really have a problem with it.

Which instrument does this happen with? And do you mean computer keyboard or piano-like instrument?

This happens with a piano as instrument and note input via a pc keyboard.
