i can not update to 4.0,1
I can't update to 4.0.1, can't uninstall 4.0.0, it always asks me to provide the installation source of 4.0.0 (I removed it right after installing)

Maybe reinstalling 4.0.0 first will work (but maybe not)

if the 4.0 installer is still available I got through this step without reinstalling it. unfortunately i deleted it

4.0.0 sure still is available, see https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/releases/tag/v4.0

If you install 4.0 again from the link above it will also reinstall the 4.0 installer (that you deleted). Immediately after that install 4.0.1 (or 4.02 if available), and that should now find the 4.0 installer which it needs to uninstall 4.0.
I hope this is clearer now...
I also cannot update to 4.0.1. Haven't tried the uninstalling route yet. I know that sometimes new versions have bugs but if I can't update how can I get rid of the bugs?

Here's what I did and it worked! I had muse 3 and muse 2 on my computer. A belt and suspenders sort of thing I guess. So I deleted them and tried the update to muse4 and it worked!!
