Finger numbers in addition to dots for fretboard diagrams
It'd be nice to be able to use fingering numbers in fretboard diagrams, as in this image . Or just as bare numbers.

I've seen fingering numbers in fretboard diagrams which are on their own, but not when they are part of a musical score. The diagrams have to be quite large to display numbers, and the ones MuseScore can display are intentionally fairly small, so that a reasonable amount of music can still be fitted onto a page (usually A4 or Letter).
In my opinion, even the small fretboard diagrams take up too much space, and if I wanted to indicate a specific fingering I would do that in a 'footnote' at the start or end of the score. You could do that by dragging an image of a fretboard diagram, created in other software, into your MuseScore score.

You're right. Thanks!

Note that you can make the fretboard diagram larger in the score if you want. Open View > Inspector and select one or several fretboard and change the scale property in inspector.
Relates to #283681: [EPIC] Fretboard diagram issues, an issue in the tracker would be better
See #313099: Add an option to display finger numbers in chord diagrams
There is this nice toggle function on top of the diagram, which toggles between ' ', '0', 'X'.
Maybe, the easiest way to implement would be to extend this list with '1', '2', '3' and '4'
Then, with each mouse-click, one would be able to choose from this extended list: ' ', 'X', '0', '1', '2', '3' or '4'
Just a thought! And it would indeed be a very nice feature for students.

Plus some number or letter for Thumb, I guess
