Cannot get the triplet function to work using quarter notes in a standard 4/4 meter

I am trying to enter a piece of music where at the start of the measure, I need to have a triplet with quarter notes and the software will only let me use eighth notes in the editing. I have another measure where I need to place two successive triplets with quarter notes and that is not happening either. The online instructions just indicate to select the note value and then the triplet function and it should work, but does not appear to be happening that way. Thanks for any help. I am new to MuseScore.

Thanks very much. After toying with the information on the link you provided, I was able, after much trial and error to figure out to first put a half note rest at the location I wanted my triplet, hit the triplet toggle which produced three quarter notes in the triplet, and then I could add the notes.
