Why is MuseScore so slow

• Mar 2, 2024 - 08:42

In "Made with MuseScore", I made a posting about my latest engraving of a Symphonie piece https://musescore.org/en/node/361239

On my laptop, computer data in the posting, the score is extremely slow. As an example, it takes more than 35 second to just save the score. Also, although not a very long piece, it's 1.4MB which seems a lot.

Hi, I was curious so I tested this for you with my Dell i7, 32G laptop (2 years old maybe). I made a minor change and hit save. At first it looked like it was done instantly, but when I tried to use the main menu the program gave me the spinning circle for about 20 seconds or so (it said "Not responding" in the program bar. I tried "save" and "save as" and got the same results.

I guess I am seeing about the same thing.

Still curious, I downloaded a public domain score that was also very large, and I had to save it in musescore 4.2. It's 96 pages long. I made a small change and it was saved immediately.

A couple curious things I noticed.

The original version, saved in 3.2 was 344kb.
The version saved in 4.2 was 979kb (called TEST below)
Your score is 1410kb

Now I don't know what to do with this information, but there seems to be a lot of data in yours

I've now copied the music to a new score. It's not yet completely formatted, but two improvements are evident:
1. All operations including saving is much faster
2. The parts are synchronized with the score, see problem report https://musescore.org/en/node/361277 where I reported loads of missing dynamics, e.g. hairpins, in the parts although the were included in the score. Now, everything in the score is also in the parts.

Also, the naming of the instruments and naming of the parts is not stable. Before I started CP music from my "old" score, I set up the new score instrument and part names. For some reason, something is triggering MuseScore to change the naming of the instruments, the parts or both. This is extremely annoying. I don't know how many times I've corrected this.

That's what I normally do. Just now I cannot pinpoint what operations trigger MuseScore to change the instrument name, the part name or both.

As an example, I've 3 horns in F in the instrument panel. When you set up the score the are named Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2 and Horn in F 3. Hence I first change the name in the instrument pallet to Horn I, II in F, Horn I in F and Horn II in F. I make the same changes in the parts panel.

Now due to something which I cannot identify, it changes the names to e.g. just Horn, Horn 1 in F, of Horn in F (1). Sometimes in the instrument pallet, the parts panel or both. Very annoying.
