Musescore app not opening on MacOS 11.7
Hey everyone, I have been using Musescore 4 multiple times a week for almost two years on my MacBook with absolutely no issues.
Yesterday, I tried to open Musescore 4 and the application wouldn't open. It bounced on the dock for a second and the white dot appeared under the logo to show it was opening, but then it stopped bouncing and the dot disappeared. I cannot open Musescore or Musehub.
I have tried restarting my computer, deleting and redownloading Musescore (both with and without Musehub) but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone know why this is happening or how to stop this?

I haven’t tried 4.3 with Mac yet but it’s worth bringing up.
Same here as of today. Musescore 3 still works though.

…well, musescore 3 never changed. Try to keep your comments relevant.

It -is- super relevant ! Knowing that V3 still works helps to know that there was no fundamental system change. Try to keep -your- comments relevant

There are lots of differences between how MU4 might react and how MU3 might.

So what?

So MU4 might react for some reason while MU3 doesn’t?
I have the same issue. Mac os 11.7.1
I'm getting the exact same issue and I'm also on 11.7(.2). Was there an update with a bug?

looks like that.

Seems more like a bug with an update ;-)
Same here, running MacOS 11.7.10. Attempted to boot up MuseScore 4.2.1 today, and it shut itself down before any window or splash screen appeared. Checked MuseHub, which was running in the background, and saw there was an update available. Updated via MuseHub - same problem. Restarted the Mac -same problem. Restored MuseScore 4.2.1 via Time Machine - same problem. Quit Musehub, downloaded MuseScore 4.3 w/o MuseHub - same problem.
Not only does MuseScore 4.3 not boot up on MacOS 11, somehow MuseScore 4.2.1, which has been working fine since it was released, now also won’t boot up. I’m in the middle of a project that’s taken a week so far, and now I’m at a standstill.

Tried logging in as a guest user, in case there was some cruft in the settings on my account. Same problem. Very frustrating that not only does the newest version not work but the version that I was just using yesterday also doesn't work.

It would make since that a Mac update caused it except 11.x is unsupported AFAIK.

There's been no update to MacOS 11 since November of last year, when 11.7.10 was released (purely a security update). The only change to my system is that MuseScore automatically updated on its own, but now that it's done so and can't launch, even the copy of MuseScore 4.2.1 that launched last night now no longer launches. My suspicion is that in booting up MuseScore 4.30 changed some preference file that makes not only it but previously-working versions of MuseScore no longer work.
MacOS 11 has been a supported operating system for MuseScore 4; as far as I can see there's no announcement that that's changed with v. 4.30, although apparently MuseHub now requires at least MacOS 11.5, which wouldn't affect my installation.
Same here. I'm using Mac version 11.5.2. Thought it was because I forced a shut off earlier today. Downloaded the latest versions of MuseScore and MuseHub, tried downloading MuseScore through MuseHub, restarting my computer. Still not opening (it will show the "MuseScore Studio" title on the top menu next to the apple logo on the upper left and then immediately close).

That worked, thank you! But MuseScore is no longer using the better sounds from MuseHub. Do you know how to fix that as well?

The same happened to me, I hope it gets fixed soon. At least we can use the app though.

I restored the .dylib file with a backup from two days ago, before MuseScore 4.3 was released, and could then open MuseScore with the Muse Sampler libraries. Diagnostic > Muse Sampler > Check Muse Sampler will either tell you there's no Muse Sampler library or report the version of the currently installed library; for me, the most recent version that will work with MuseScore is 0.51.
Once you get it working, though, you have to be careful to never run Muse Hub. As soon as you do, Muse Hub will overwrite the .dylib file with one that stops MuseScore from launching. Hopefully they straighten this issue out soon.

I think that muse hub just isn’t updating for lots of people.

could you please share this working version of the file?

Muse sampler is what lets musescore play muse sounds.
Guys, It's been fixed! Just restart Musehub and let it do its job. Great job! And thanks to the team for fixing that issue so fast!

Just wanted to confirm; I'm now running both the latest versions of MuseScore (Studio, now) and Muse Hub, with no problems (other than the same old problems of the pizz. strings being so quiet they're regularly inaudible, and the MuseSounds strings playing every note with portamento so it sounds like a one-fingered string player sliding from note to note).
In reply to Just wanted to confirm; I'm… by EvanSquared
For the portamento issue, simply use Violin 2. It doesn't have the "expressive" nature and plays much more like what most people (well, most people who have reported here) expect.

Also - doesn't work for cellos or violas. It literally won't play any pitches outside standard violin range, which is a particular problem for the cello quartet I'm currently notating. Back to MS Basic.
