Loud static noise for all Windows sound after Musescore starts

• Jun 1, 2024 - 07:44

Hello,
I have seen a number of threads about this similar issue but not seen any resolution.

Musescore sound and everything was working but crashed earlier today.
After this crash, I have VERY loud static noise instead of sound on my PC.
The crash happened while trying to play a certain imported .xml file.

All sound applications as in Media Player, Band in a Box, Audacity, Windows OS sounds, Youtube etc. produce just loud static noise with very faint music in there somewhere.

The only solution is to restart the PC. Then all is fine, until Musescore is started (just opened, no file loaded).
After this, it is all noise again, even when closing Musescore.

And it is again not fixable until the PC is restarted.

How can I fix this?

Details:
OS: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64,
MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.6.2.548021803,
revision: 3224f34

Best regards
Bernt

Open Control Panel and select Programs. Scroll down to and select MuseScore. If there is a repair option, select it.
A bigger question is why did it crash. It should never do that.

Running the Musescore repair causes this error to appear but it does complete.

However, it does NOT fix the problem. Musescore still causes the sound of the PC to no longer operate after starting it.

I have since also uninstalled and re-installed Musescore 3 and the problem remains the same. What on earth has this program done to the PC settings to permanently stuff itself up?

What next can I do?

I have since tried all sorts of things to try and repair my system to play sound again.
I ran the WIn10 Troubleshooter and it found this issue with the sound setting. After that, the problem became fixed.

It appears that Musescore is messing up some setting(s) in the Sound Playback.

However: Checking the settings manually before and after starting Musescore does not show any changes, yet the sounds will once again become messed up.

I discovered another way to fix it is to either set the sound settings to default or to manually change the bit and sampling rate to something else and back again. It will tell you the device is in use and would you like to continue. After yes, it will do it and then the sound will be fixed.
Before changing the setting there, Pressing Test, will produce just loud static noise. After changing the setting there will produce correct sound again.

Surely this is a clue?
