Musescore 4 doesn't play invisible staves
I often have to add invisible staves when entering choral music.
In Musescore 3 these played normally, but in Musescore 4 I have to make them visible to hear them.

It's definitely a change from 3 and prevents me from doing something useful. Musescore is not well adapted to choral scores and having invisible voices enables me to make the score look correct and sound correct.

I agree, and this is a showstopper for/to me (one of several actually)
I completely agree.
Because of this, I still use v3 to make practice videos for our choir. The video shows the Sopranos/Altos stave and Tenor/Bas stave (in continous mode), so it looks just like the singers have on paper. I have invisible staves for each voice, and using the mixer can create videos where each of the voices is singled out and the others are in the background.
IMHO, this is a completely unnecessary change in v4. What was wrong with switching sounds on and off in the mixer and independent thereof switch visability in the instrumentview?

My problem would be greatly reduced if the mixer would allow separate control over the voices in one stave/instrument.

Agreed. The removal of the invisible S/A and T/B text elements for channel control is a disaster in MS4. And that is why I will stay with MS3 until the problem is sorted out - because I still have to produce practice files for two choirs!
There is a workaround already mentioned here somewhere. In the instrument panel click on the little triangle next to the open eye and close the eye of the clef. This will hide it but it will play.

Thanks! This actualy works but it is quirky to say the least.
It is still beyond me why audibiility and visibility of a stave or instrument can't be independantly switched like it was in musescore 3

There have been made some wrong descisions which will be corrected hopefully.
If you can't hear what you hide, hiding loses it's whole point.

I'll stick with v3 for the moment. I tried v4 using the workaround and found that, when using the new sounds, although great sounding, it is completely unusable. With more than 2 voices, notes get delayed or lost. On my core i7, I see one core at 100% and all others idling.
It works when using the msbasic sounds, but than I can't change the instrument in the stave editting view; hitting 'replace instruments' goes into some invisable dialog that you can only exit by pressing ESC.
This comes ontop of the general slow performance of v4, especially on scores longer than, say 4 pages.
in Mscore4 you need hide the stave, no the instruments. THat this work

For example...
In a score for harmonica and piano, in the Instruments panel, close the 'eye' on the treble clef staff of the harmonica:
The hidden harmonica will sound.
And so, in this score:
Hidden harmonica plays.mscz
The harmonica is hidden, yet it sounds during playback.

I would have referred to this as "hiding the instrument". If this is "hiding the stave", how does one "hide the instrument"?

Suppose, for example, that one has a score for a small ensemble and the sax player is unavailable, so a clarinet player is substituted.
The clarinet part can be added into the existing score; and - instead of deleting the sax - the sax can be hidden and not played. To do this, simply close the 'eye' next to the saxophone instrument itself.
This way a single score can suffice, as it contains the instruments which can be added/hidden when the need arises.

Ahh! I see. The "eye" next to the clef hides the staff but still plays it. The "eye" next to the instrument hides the staff and does not play it. Now I get it ... and that even makes sense, now that I understand it :-D
