Recent files suddenly empty - Close and reboot does not help.
I have no idea why, after years of use, suddenly this is blank, or at least not responding.
How can I get this back?

Maybe you clerared the recent file list by mistake. Why dont you use Open, then it should be filled new.

I have been using MS since it was still in beta. I have no idea how i would have cleared it. :)
As to using "open", I have been, and I tried again on your suggestion - no result.
Is there a switch I can access? I cannot find it.

File / Open. Browse to the place you have stored your scores. Select one and open it. Once you close it, THAT ONE will appear on the Recent Files list.
Alternatively, use the Windows File Explorer (or Finder [I think that's the right name?] in MacOS) to find a specific score file. Double-click it to open. Once it does so, THAT ONE will appear on the Recent Files list.
Basically, you are building the list anew.

What do you mean by "not working"?
Saving and closing a score normally makes it appear in the Recent File list. If not, you might do a "Revert to factory settings". Which can reset the Recent File list.

AHA indeed! My apologies! I was thinking that merely opening a file added it to the list. Of course it's saving the file that does so. My bad!

Strange.
On my system, just opening a score - without saving it - is enough to add it to the list.

It is necessary that the file is existing. If it is not saved for the first time or if it is deleted it will not appear in the list.

If a file is listed in the Recent Files list and is then deleted, it does not disappear from Recent Files. It is not necessary that the file exists for it to appear in Recent Files.

It might not disappear immediately, but it will be removed the next time MuseScore tries to regenerate the list.

When does that happen? Until I manually deleted the list a couple of months ago, I had scores listed there that had been deleted MANY MONTHS before. I now have scores listed there from that ~3 months ago that have been deleted that long. I have not yet seen a single instance of it automagically removing any entry from that list.

What happens when you try clicking on one of them? For me they are removed the very next start of MuseScore, but if there is some remnant of the file on your system somehow - like you deleted one copy but there was another - that would explain what you are seeing.

Sorry for the delay in answering, Marc. I was attending a fiddle convention/competition over the weekend. Fun!!!
In answer, I must say, "Well, I be go-to-hell!" This is definitely working now.
Before I manually cleared the list a couple of months ago, it definitely wasn't. I looked at four or five specific examples of files that no longer existed on the hard drive and, as best I could recall, had not for several months. I'm'a guess that the manual procedure I followed to clear the list (https://musescore.org/en/node/361021), allowed MuS to properly get rid of deleted files once again. It appears that I had not explicitly tried to do that since then.
The recent files list is specific to your version of MuseScore. So, MuseSocre 4 will only show files opened in MuseScore 4, etc.
If for any reason a score can't be located when MuseScore opens, it will be removed from the list. So if it's on a external or network drive, or one using a cloud service, and the connection can't be made, the file will no longer appear. Same if the folder containing the drive has had its permissions changed or been renamed or moved, or if the drive itself is starting to fail.
Also, the list is per user, so if you're logged in to your computer under a different user account, that would also show you a different recent files list.

Hi Marc, the files are all on my computer, in the same place, same user, same everything.
It's is still happening. I open a file, close it, check the recent files, it's there.
Next time I reboot after shutting down, there is no response when I hover over recent files.

Very strange. All I can say is, somehow or other, your OS is reporting to MuseScore the file is not present. Is it a network drive that might be slow to respond, or anything else physical like that to explain why the file might temporarily not be seen?

Perhaps, or it just means, as opposed to "save to cloud". I'm grasping at straws here because I really can't imagine anything that would cause this, other than the things that have definitely been ruled out.

A possible test to help understanding what is happening :
Create 2 files in MuseScore and save them to the same new folder created for this test.
Check both of them are in recent files.
Reboot.
Open MuseScore by double click one of the files.
What's in recent file ? 0, 1 or 2 files of that folder ?

The content of the recent files is stored in a file recent_files.json , under
Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4
MacOS: ~/Library/Application\ Support/MuseScore/MuseScore4/.
Linux: ~/.local/share/MuseScore/MuseScore4/
and is updated the moment you open a file.
I would check this first.
