musescore crashing after saying score was saved on a newer version when it wasn't

The most recent files I've been working have disappeared from the recent score page and when I try to open them I get a message saying "open error - this file was saved using a newer version of MuseScore. Visit the MuseScore website to obtain the latest version". If I click on "cancel", nothing happens. If I click on "ignore" it opens a blank page or just crashes. I don't really understand the problem report. I'm on macos sonoma 14.1.1, running MuseScore 4.0.1. Anyone ever seen anything similar?
