Sound on upgrade from MS 3 to 4
Sound works great on MS3, upgraded to 4 and sound is high pitched and doesn't sound like any musical instrument. Using Windows 11, Intel i7-9700, 16 mb of memory. Sound is set to 16 bit 48000 and there is no lower setting. Help

Has anyone encountered this problem? Sound is at least an octave high (Possibly 2 octaves) and there are no instrument sounds, it's all one type of high pitched sound. I tried to upload a mp3 file but that type of file was not allowed.

Is that an exported mp3 from MuseScore? If so, does that export also sound higher pitched?
Which OS are you using? I believe bitrate/samperate issues normally make the pitch go up/down by 1 tone.
Is playback at normal speed?
Are you making use of any virtual sound processing drivers? If so, please try to use the system direct and see if that works better.

Thank you for the response. I am using the latest version of Windows 11 and I just checked to see if it is up to date and it is. The processor is an Intel i7-9300, I have 16 mb of memory. I have reset the buffer size in MS to 4800 bits and have checked to make sure my sound drivers are up to date. The bit rate for my sound output is set to 16 bit 48000 hz and there is no lower option. I am not using any virtual sound drivers. The sound works great on MS version 3.6.0 so I don't know what has changed between versions. The mp3 I have was recorded from my output speakers with a handheld recorder.

It is odd that you only have a sound output option for 16 bit at 48 kHz, Do you have any other options?
Apology for the Dutch screenshot/detail. Just want to show where you need to look for this setting.
Sometimes the setting is "fixed" when a certain device is used/connected. Often seen when using Bluetooth Headphones. Do you have other sound output options you can test?
For uploading an mp3, you can compress it to zip if needed.
Can you check what happen when you export to mp3 using MS?

Thank you for your input and suggestions. I just tried playing the files through my Galaxy earbuds and the sound was fine, the problem appears to be with the Bose speaker system that I use. The system is a Bose Companion 5 multimedia speaker system. I am trying to find our if there is a driver update that I can install that will help resolve the problem. I am trying to understand why the system works fine with MS 3 and not 4? I downloaded the Bose updater and they did not recognize he serial number, I will try again. The Bose system has just one setting for output and that is 16 bit 48000 hz. Thanks again for your response!

Happy the help. There is a major difference in how MS 3 and MS 4 are designed, so no surprise that is works correct in MS 3 and not in MS 4. I believe I have seen more topics that indicate issues with (some) Bose speaker systems, but more important speaker system with more than 2 channels output. Glad you found it works fine with the Galaxy earbuds, so at least you know it works.
Can you change the speaker setting to use 2 channel output and see if that works better?
It that is the issue, it might be resolved in the next MS release (version 4.4.3). If you want you can test that already by using a Nightly build.
You can find more information about Nightly builds here: https://musescore.org/en/nightly-builds
It is recommend only to use them for testing/validation purpose, not for "normal" work as they may contain other issues/bugs that need to be resolved.
The Nightly build is a .7z file which you have to extract and which can exist next to the normal MuseScore Studio install. It is using it's own folder for settings etc. This is the link to the most recent Nightly version: https://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/musescore-nightlies/windows/4x/nightly/MuseS…

Tried downloading the latest build however it would not open using 7-Zip. Got the following error message:
7-Zip 24.08 (x64)
Error
Unsupported command
MusescoreNightly
Latest-4.4.3X86(1).7z
Talked to Boze about downloading a new driver and they use the standard Microsoft driver which I checked and it is up to date.

Perhaps you can try to select 2 speaker/channel output for the Bose system. At least I am assuming it has more channels. If it then works correct, it would be a matter of waiting for the formal 4.4.3 release, which I believe should not be long after this

Thank you for the suggestion. I have tried setting the system to two speakers instead of surround sound or L/R and woofer and none of them work properly. The system is attached via USB and it uses a Microsoft standard driver which is up to date. I will work with the system using earbuds and hope that the 4.4.3 release resolves the problem. I want to thank you for the time and help you have provided. It gives me a good feeling that there is someone willing to take the time to work with me on the issue. Is there some way to pass this information on to the developers so they can address the issue? Reverting back to 3.0 sound would resolve the issue.

Apology for the delay in my reply.
Perhaps you can retry the nightly build? Sounds the file you downloaded was corrupt/not complete. Once you have confirmed it works fine in the nightly build, you know it will be fixed 4.4.3 and no need to get development further involved. They would also ask to test and confirm the functionality in the nightly, as the issue due to the extra sound channels should be resolved in that.

One of my computers has only one bit rate setting. Uncheck Exclusive mode where you see that bit rate setting.
In Edit>Preferences>Audio and Midi>make sure your actual audio device is selected (headphones or speakers). Not just Default. Try different Buffer settings.

Thank you for your response, I am using the Boze Companion 5 speaker system and it only has one bit rate setting, 16 bit 48000hz. I have unchecked "Allow apps to take exclusive control and Give Exclusive mode applications priority" and continue to get the same problem. I have also selected the Boze system as output for the midi. The sound works fine with my earbuds but not the Boze system. Hopefully this issue will be resolved in the next release. I have downloaded the latest build and attempted to install it using 7z however I get errors on the unzip.

Henk, thank you for the suggestion, I have downloaded at least 3 of the nightly builds and attempted to open them with 7z and continue to get the same error. I will continue to work with the earbuds until the next version of MS comes out, hopefully the problem will be addressed in the new release. I appreciate the help you have provided. Thank you.

Not sure what is happening with the 7z files. Hope the next will be available soon and that it fixes your issue.
