musescore in-program playback sounds different than the exported audio file playback
I'm mainly using M3, is this resolved in M4? Hope there's something I can do about this because I think the program playback is significantly better.

In MU4 it depends on if you are using Basic sounds or Muse sounds.
BTW do you pan your scores? That can help with exported audio.

There is no "Muse sounds" in MS3, which the OP uses. The reason for the difference must be something else.

I was merely referring to the part of the question about MU4.
