Playback and color issue for Out-of-range notes: silent during playback AND out-of-range colors are not showing
Example: Add Soprano 1 instrument. Add notes C5 G4 B3. Try playback. Any note below middle C (C4) does not sound in the playback, and the out-of-range color indicator does not show on the staff.
I've tried changing the pitch range settings in the voices. Sometimes that works, and I can get the playback. Other times it does not work.
Color problem: Score does not show the out-of-range color indicators as it did in v3, and I do have Edit > Preferences > Note Input set to Color notes outside of usable pitch range.

Changing the range settings in staff/part properties doesn't affect playback at all, just the color coding.
If the sound you are using doesn't support the notes you are writing, you can switch to a different sound - eg, alto instead of soprano,or just use MS Basic.
A Soprano that goes down do G2? Serious?
If the problem is that the note-out-of-range color function doesn't work for soundfonts other than MS Basic, it should be fixed. Other notation software does despite native or imported sounds.

It isn't, it is purely a matter of instrument/staff properties, totally independant of sound
Sopran, the female voice, just doesn't go that low (Bb3, Ab3), Altos do though (and so does Women).
But the sound you assigned to it, Flute, doesn't go that low

As mentioned, the out-of-range indication has nothing to do with the sound library selected. It's just advice about the actual playability/singability of the notes by actual musicians. Dark yellow means the note might be hard for amateurs but still possible for professionals; red means the note is considered unplayable/unsingable. Of course, for some instruments there really is no fixed upper end to the range; the red indicator in that case just means the generally-agreed-upon limit of what is considered reasonable to write for professional musicians in an ensemble setting.
Whether or not those out of range notes happen to have been sampler or digitally emulated in any given sound library has no bearing on this - again, this is simply about what is considered playable/singable by human musicians.

Got it.
The attached score settings must be screwed up because the notes for both instruments don't turn green or red at the upper range and turn only red at the extreme lower range. Raise and lower any notes and see what your see and what may be wrong.
Thanks for your help.

What instrument is is supposed to be? Apparently 2 Grand pianos (one for treble clef and another for bass clef), that has quite a large range, A0 to C8

Well that's weird. Sending agin with instrument names on first system. I'm using Muse Sounds/Woodwinds for oboe and bassoon.

You may have set the playback sound to oboe and bassoon, but the instrument definitions are both grand piano. You can see this in Staff/Part properties. So, the usable range is given as A0 to C8.
It appears you created a score for two pianos, then removed staves and fiddled with the mixer settings and names for the remaining staves, but you never actually changed the instrument from the original pianos. You need to do that to get everything set up properly. You could just change the range in Staff/Part properties, but there are still likely other things that would be happening based on the actual instrument.

Aha! You are absolutely correct. Thank you so much for this info, Marc.

Marc, So I need to:
Create a new score, set it up with X number of staves,
Copy the notation from the piano score and paste it into two separate staves of the new score,
Assign various instruments to each stave of the new score.
Correct?

You are quite right. Much easier. Thanks JoJo!
