MP3 sounds better if made from XML rather than MSCZ.
I'm producing small sound files for a book. MSCZ doesn't sound as good as XML and the MP3 made from them is different too. Sometimes the MSCZ wreaks the last note into a screech or something. The MP3 made from the XML always sound wonderful, like the XML does.
I've started making all my MP3s from the XMLs going forward. It probably all has to do with the source files and is just the way it is. However, the latest XMLs and their MP3s are awesome. Thank you so much!
Just feedback. Thanks for listening.

How do you make and MP3 from an XML file?

I think they meant MusicXML (in the Export dialog)

Yes. Thank you. I apologize for not using the correct terms. MusicXML sounds so much better than MSCZ in playback. So does the MP3 made from MusicXML. Maybe something the developers may think about.
I've wondered if MSCZ is using a different sound file than MusicXML. Maybe MSCZ is the standard one and MusicXML is enhanced. I don't tinker with any of it. Over my head. Just sharing observations.
Thanks for listening.

But that comes from the .MSCZ file? And how did OP go from MusicXML to .MP3?

I thought she meant the same, but still, how does one get an MP3 from MusicXML? I know there are ways, for instance import the MusicXML into another notation app. Maybe some DAWs read MusicXML? But it's unclear now the OP generates MP3s from MusicXML.

Because the MusicXML and the MP3 are included in the books, I always listen to them before I ship them to postprocessing.
Just my observations. Thanks for listening.

MusicXML doesn't make sounds at all. It's just a text format, mostly used to transfer music notation between different notation (and other kinds of) applications.
When you "open the MusicXML in MuseScore", MuseScore creates a .MSCZ file, which is what plays. THAT's what we were confused about (and I am still confused).
Here's an analogy: Picture creating a Word document, saving it as .DOCX, and also saving it as .TXT. Then opening the .TXT file in Word and finding that it prints better in some fashion than the .DOCX prints.

Wow! Just me being me I guess. My experience doesn't conform to accepted reality. I don't have an answer either. Thanks for the information. I'll still keep doing it, however. I know what I hear and want the best for my books. Creating music for books can be tedious, such as finding a short passage in a very long opera. But I love it. Music makes me happy.
When you have nothing else to do, perhaps you could compare the playback of MSCZ and the MusicXML you created from it. Do the same with the MP3s generated by both. If you can't hear the difference, it must my synesthesia enhancing my life again. ;)
Thanks again for everything. This has all be very enlightening! <3
Here is one way this can happen.
Let's say that in Playback Setup, you have Muse sounds checked to use for new scores As I do.
I set up a score to use Basic sounds. When I Save As with the name I want, an mscz file is created. Then before I close it I export it as an mxl. which is created as such.
When I open the mscz file, Basic sounds are loaded. These do not sound great in mp3 export.
If I open the mxl file, Muse sounds are loaded and sound better in mp3 export.

YES! That's exactly what I am experiencing, the difference between Basic and Muse Sounds. I know MuseScore is always creating better listening experiences.
Thank you so much! I don't feel like a synesthesia weirdo now. Still who I am, but always glad to find people who experience things the way I do.
Thank you so much, bojp! You're the BEST! <3

I'm confused again. This implies that OP took an action to explicitly make the original .MSCZ file "worse", that is, they set it to use Basic sounds rather than the default (because set so in Playback Setup) Muse Sounds. I had certainly not gotten that impression from what OP said.
Without that explicit action, the sound of the saved .MSCZ file and the newly-created-from-musicxml .MSCZ file should be the same. HOW could they be different?

I have no idea what actually happened. I'm just offering one way it could have happened.

Try it yourself. See if you get a different result. I believe I'm getting a different result, however, without other verification. You'd have to hear the change yourself.
Thanks for your skepticism, TheHutch. Makes all of us dig deeper for answers. For now, I'm satisfied. <3
Sorry for joining into this discussion. I don't use MuseSounds, but I can assume that MuseSounds is enabled by default for new projects (this can be seen in the settings: Menu - View - Playback setup). The mxl file can't store information about MuseSounds instruments, so Musescore enables them by default. But Musescore should definitely take the sound settings from already created Musescore files (.mscz) and if MS Basic is initially specified in the project settings, it will remain there until MuseSounds sounds are manually configured in the mixer. This is the only explanation I can think of for this situation.

Thanks for your input, mercuree! Just another verification that I hear things other people don't. I appreciate all the feedback and am satisfied for now that something is possible, even if not probable. Just me being me.
I decided to reset everything to Factory Settings. That keeps things simple. I didn't see sound settings right away. I'll put on my good spectacles and see if there is a way to set it to MuseSounds,.
Thanks again! <3
