Playback Not Working
I had a crash yesterday while working on a very large and detailed score (full orchestra). After reopening MuseScore, playback had stopped working.
I tried...
- deleting soundfonts, reinstalling and saving to score
- opening other scores I had on my computer
- deleting MuseScore and reinstalling
- installing nightly build
- restarting my computer (many times)
[EDIT: also tried reverting to factory settings]
Nothing worked. This morning, was still not working when trying to playback my own files.
I downloaded and opened a .mscz file created by another user from Musescore.com and playback suddenly worked. Playback also returned on all of my files also.
MuseScore 2.1 (Revision: 871c8ce)
OSX 10.12.6
Macbook (Retina, 12in early 2015)
No Bluetooth devices or USB peripherals connected

I forgot to add that I tried this. Updated description of the problem. Downloading and opening a file from someone else seems to be what "magically" fixed it. :)

I have done all the same things Daniel has done except the "magic" didn't happen when I tried playing someone else's score just now. In my case, the problem started when I was playing back and I hit the space bar to pause and maybe accidently clipped another key at the same time. Whatever I did, I've had no sound since.
It's frustrating as I'm at the point where an arrangement is really coming together.

Sorry if I've added a red herring. My problem may be with Windows or hardware. There is no sound at all on any software. Windows diagnostics can't find a problem with the sound card but I bet it's where the problem lies.
BTW: My laptop has no problems.

Check the general PC mixer.

Thanks, but I can't find any error in the PC mixer. All the settings seem to be OK and Windows tells me it is operating normally.

Check:
If there are any updates for the sound card drivers;
If an application has exclusive use of the sound card;
If you can attach a Edit/Preferences/I/O Settings screenshot.

All fixed. It was a poor speaker jack connection.
Grazie mille.
I had the same problem again. The problem occurred when trying to import a musicxml file and was in process of editing instruments, but before I had saved file as .mscz
After hours of trying absolutely everything (revert to factory settings, clean install, reboot, etc.) I completely uninstalled MuseScore. I reinstalled 2.1 and uninstalled 3 times with no success.
Sound still did not work when trying to create a new score or import.
After 3rd clean install, I decided to try "Revert to Factory Settings" even though I had tried it before reinstalling and without success, and even though this was a clean install.
It worked.

@Daniel, I don't know if you can find any clues here: https://musescore.org/en/node/234811
