How to make custom musescore instruments using presets from the second or third file in the synthesizer
I'm not very experienced with making XML files. I think it's a cross between text and code. I am going to make a soundfont entirely out of files on freesoundvault.com . It will not be GM compatible so I will make an XML file. If I could set the instruments to use the soundfont with it being second that would be great. If not I guess I can make it for first. But some lesson on how to make this would be great. I'm thinking of doing a lot of copying and pasting from the musescore instruments file is this going to work?

A soundfont is not an Xml file, Musescore's instruments.xml is not a soundfont
But maybe I missunderstand you?

I know that. What part of what I typed makes you think otherwise.

I meant to only use the word "it" once. The XML is accompanying it.

Create a score with instruments using sound from a 2nd soundfont, save as mscx and view with an editor to see how those get encoded, then use that in your custom instruments.xml

By editor do you mean an XML editor? mscz is based off mxl (my guess) which is related to XML but that seems like a stretch. Would I have to export to music XML?

Mscx is uncompressed mscz, and plain text, so any plain text editor can read it

Would I save it as mscx when I save as? (I would test this out myself right now if I were at my computer but I am using my phone so immediate confirmation is requested.)

That, or via export, not sure, being on my phone myself
