version 2.2.1 doesn't export .xml files?
I use other software that imports .xml files. Is there a file that Musescore exports that could be renamed as .xml?

Make sure you have the translation updated (Help Menu);
Try typing the extension after the name

Could you be more specific about having the translation updated... a specific web link?

was a problem on previous versions and old OSs (eg.XP)
To be clear: MuseScore does indeed export XML - specifically, MusicXML, which is undoubtedly the flavor of XML your other software is expecting. Simply go to File / Export and select MusicXML as the output format. It is true the MusicXML people have changed the official file extension to be .musicxml instead of .xml, so we are conforming to that. But if your other software hasn't been updated to this more modern standard, simply rename your .musicxml file to the old .xml extension.

I renamed the file to .xml (after exporting as .musicxml) and the problem was solved. My other software now imports this changed file name. Thanks everyone for your help.

Oh, that’s irritating… why wasn’t the old .xml kept?
That being said, exporting with
-o foo.xmlon the command line still exports MusicXML, so my scripts still work (which is likely why I didn’t notice this). Heh.In reply to Oh, that’s irritating… why… by mirabilos

Yeah, I found it now.
MusicXML 3.1 files are recommended to be saved as
.musicxmlbut applications should expect to also be requested to open.xmlfiles as MusicXML (3.1, since all files that are a valid older MusicXML version are also valid MusicXML 3.1)..musicxml is what you need. If your other program doesn't like this, but wants .xml you need to rename it
