Time signature required?
Is there a straightforward way to eliminate time signatures? Not just hide, but ditch. Or is this a pen and paper solution?

You mean for meterless music? Not really, but you can fake it.

Don't delete it, but rather disable the display of it in the staff properties.
Make use of measure join/split to end up with measures that are exactly as long as what you want to show on a single line of music.
