Musescore 2.1 not opening in Windows 10
Musescore 2.0 was working fine on my Windows 10 home pc but I had not used it for a while. So when I opened it and was prompted to download the upgrade to 2.1 I did so. It all installed fine, but it won't open at all. I have tried:
- uninstalling and reinstalling several times
- reverting to factory settings using -F
- using -w and -s switches in various permutations with -F
- installing the 64-bit version and then trying all combinations of (2) and (3)
- as (4) but with the portable version
- tried the various different portaudio.dll suggestions from a post with similar problem
- checked that the Windows firewall was on when I installed (this from solution from a different but similar post)
- I have even tried reinstalling older versions again, but no joy
The only thing which I have tried which gets it to work is to use -d switch. Musescore opens, and works fine in that I can edit scores. However, when I print to hard copy, all the text is there, plus barlines and some ascenders/descenders and beams, but no clefs, key signatures, noteheads or slurs.
It will probably be obvious that I am just groping about in the dark here, but it seems to me that there is some sort of problem with the fonts, and that probably Windows 10 has changed something to make the problem (if in doubt blame Microsoft, eh?).
Any thoughts?

You might be groping in the dark, but you're doing exactly the sorts of things I'd be recommending, so your intuition is good :-).
On the assumption the problem is indeed something to do with fonts, can you see if you have any fonts installed with any of the following names:
Mscore
Mscore1
Emmentaler
Bravura
Gonville
Gootville
If so, delete them and try again.

Not absolutely sure that I am looking in the right place, but if you mean in Control Panel > Appearance and Personalisation > Fonts, then none of those fonts are there.

That should be the right place

OK so none of the fonts are there. Any other thoughts?

Still no joy. So I have tried one last thing - although I hate having to edit the registry when I don't really feel confident about what I am doing.
In https://musescore.org/en/node/99886 Mark Scholes says:
And Jojo-Schmitz replies:
So I checked my registry - I don't have MitigationOptions in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Kernel\, but when I put it in and disable it then MuseScore 2.1 works absolutely fine.
So now I just have to figure out how to have it set, but with MuseScore as an exception.
Should this get added to https://musescore.org/en/handbook/known-incompatibilities ?

Has Adobe installed their PDF Printer as the Default Printer? If so this might be the culprit
In reply to Has Adobe installed their PDF by Jojo-Schmitz
Nope - my own trusted Brother MFC is the default printer.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH !!!!!!!!!!! I had exactly the same pb on Win 10 and THAT manip worked fine.
As a summary:
- Win10 embeds something that prevents apps from installing untrusted policies
- MuseScore cannot start without those policies
- This registry key allows one to disable that 'blocking' behavior
- Installing Musescore AFTER this key edition makes the installer program able to install the needed policies
- If you don't feel like keeping this register key, just remove it after the installation
Again Thanks to Catherine from France !!!
I have the same problem. none of these fonts is present. And no pdf printer. The rest is hebrew I must say! :-) Anybody who can provide a simple solution. :p
Thanks in advance.

What OS (operating system)?
What version of MuseScore?
Has MuseScore worked in the past?
If yes, what version worked?

2. I've tried 2.1, and older versions as well. 1.3 starts, but gives an error afterwards (need to upgrade)
No, new machine

In addition to viewing the links posted above...
Have you tried running MuseScore as administrator?
Does anything show up in the Windows Task Manager?
Does any icon appear on the taslbar?
