Rage with using adding in different note counts in the same stem

Whenever i try changing a single note on the same beat, in changes the length of the other note on the same count! :( I am so fustrated Screen Shot 2018-06-07 at 11.56.20 AM.png to this after pressing the whole note button Screen Shot 2018-06-07 at 11.56.20 AM.png can someone please tell me how to change it so that the top/bottom note can be changed seperately? Thx
